Catsrol GTX 10W40 for Winter use, 20W50 for Summer use..(SE.Texas) = 10,000+ miles on my '01 Savage with 0/problems. Change the Oil every 1500 miles and the Filter every 3000 Miles, and don't worry about a thing! The Savage is designed to work at low RPM,and cruse in the 3/4000 RPM range. With that thought, any good oil that meets the proper Viscosity requirements will work well. That big single cyl runs alot cooler than a V Twinn because more air can reach the back of the Cyl.Use the Hi-Tech Oil for the Hi-tech Motorcycles. The Savage Engine is nothing more than a Briggs Engine on Steroids and with proper use and service, is just as reliable. The most important thing to keep in mind is the low oil capacity the Crankcase holds.
2 Quarts ain't alot.A little bit of dirt goes a long way with this Engine, for this reason, keep that oil and filter changed often!!! Varoooom :)
